A sudden wave of recollection confronted
me as I was busy making my final paper on Political Science, and I can’t
concentrate on my duty without first facing this nagging desire to share what I
learned in Sociology so far. (After all, what good would it bring me if I won’t
talk about the things I learned by now right? Anyway)
This is not properly constructed; the
ideas below are woven complicatedly, randomly, and undoubtedly crazily:
·
I
learned that nobody wants to feel the pressure of being different. I am not
talking about the differences in the physical appearance of people, but this is more on what goes
through a person’s mind when confronted with everyday situations. We may even tend to compromise our own judgments for the sake of blending in with others and the way things normally work.
·
We
learn through imitation and conformity; people would tend to conform to the beliefs
and ideals of the society so as not to be put on the shameful light of being deviant.
·
We
don’t wear masks. I guess I should really put a double emphasis (if there is such as thing like that) on this one. People may sometimes go all emotional saying that they can
never show their true selves because of anxiously thinking about what might
others make out of their actions, but let’s now put a dramatic end to this:
There is no faking. How we react and act on a certain event to another is only
our way of dealing with the events as it unfolds.
·
We
all have the ability to manipulate reality. After all, reality happens daily as
it happens to us. From the dramaturgical perspective of Erving Goffman, we are all actors
always manipulating and acting out numerous roles. The every experiences we
undergo demands us to act depending in the situation and the people present at
the moment. A girl may be wild and crazy on a party but also be as tame as a
kitten inside church. That example clearly is not a case of pretending, but
merely a case of living according to what the society conceive as true and
acceptable. We can make or break rules, but that is not pretending, that is
living.
I love Sociology; it only adds things up
to the madness I initially have.
